Are you EXCITED for your Snowboard Camp adventure but unsure WHAT TO WEAR?
Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!
Proper clothing is ESSENTIAL to staying warm, dry, and comfortable on the slopes.
This guide will walk you through the key layers & accessories you need to enjoy your ride without freezing or overheating.
Ready? Let’s dive in!
1. The 3 layers Rule: Stay Warm & Dry
Snowboarding requires the right combination of layers to regulate your body temperature while keeping you dry.
Follow the 3-layer rule for optimal comfort:
1. Base Layer: Moisture – Wicking Thermal Underwear
- Thermal Merino wool fabric
- Synthetic fabrics like polyester or polypropylene
2. Mid Layer: Insulation for Warmth
This layer traps body heat while allowing moisture to escape. Good options include:
- A fleece jacket or pullover
- A lightweight down or synthetic insulated jacket
3. Outer Layer: Waterproof & Windproof Protection
Your outer layer shields you from wind, snow, and moisture.
Look for:
- A snowboarding jacket with waterproofing (10,000mm+ rating)
- Snow pants with waterproof and breathable fabric
2. Choosing the right Accessories
Beyond clothing, the right accessories are essential for a comfortable and safe ride.
1. Gloves vs. Mittens: Which is Better?
- Gloves provide better dexterity for adjusting bindings
- Mittens offer more warmth since fingers share heat
- Waterproof and insulated options are a must
2. Socks: Avoid Thick Cotton Socks!
- Use merino wool or synthetic snowboarding socks
- Avoid thick socks that restrict circulation
- Make sure your boots fit snugly but comfortable
3. Helmet & Goggles: Safety First
- Helmet: Protects your head and keeps you warm
- Goggles: Essential for visibility in snow and bright conditions
4. Neck Warmer or Balaclava
A fleece or merino wool neck warmer helps block wind and snow while keeping your face warm.
3.Extra Tips
- Layer Adjustments: Bring an extra mid-layer in case the temperature drops.
- Snow Pants: Make sure the bottom of your snow pants are wide enough to cover the width of your snow boot.
I bought a pair of pants from a renoun brand specialised in snow clothes and those pants never made it over my snow boot because it was too tight, probably made for ski boots. Learn from my mistakes 😉
- Unleash your creativity: Snow clothes are a great way to go full on colors, it’s easier to be recognized or to recognize your friends on the slopes, it’s fun on the white background.
4. My Outfit
Spoiler Alert!
I usually buy gear and keep it for a long time.
My first snow pants were an entry-level price from Decathlon about 10 years ago, and I still use them today.
So yes, it might seem expensive when you have to gear up all at once, but the gear is very technical, high quality and built to last.
In the long term, it’s actually not that expensive.
Although, you can find great deals at the end of the winter season, in the fall, or during special sales througout the year.
That being said here is my outfit.

- Ski socks from Decathlon
- Base layer tops and bottom from Decathlon
- Mid Layer Zip Hood from Peak Design
- Extra mid layer light down jacket for colder conditions and because I’m chilly
- Snow Pants from Decathlon (mine is an older version not online any more)
- Snow Jacket Volcom
5. Common Mistakes to Avoid
Many beginners make simple mistakes when dressing for snowboarding. Avoid these pitfalls:
❌ Wearing Cotton: It gets wet and stays wet, making you cold.
❌ Overdressing: Too many thick layers can make you overheat and sweat, leading to discomfort.
❌ Ignoring Sun Protection: Snow reflects sunlight, increasing the risk of sunburn. Use SPF 30+ sunscreen!
❌ Wearing the Wrong Socks: Too thick can cause blisters, and cotton retains moisture.

FAQ: Your Snowboarding Clothing Questions Answered
Can I wear jeans for snowboarding?
No, jeans are not waterproof and will get wet quickly, making you cold and uncomfortable.
What should I wear under my snowboard pants?
Wear thermal leggings or moisture-wicking base layers to keep warm and dry.
Do I need special socks for snowboarding?
Yes! Avoid cotton socks and opt for merino wool or synthetic snowboarding socks for warmth and breathability.
Is there a real difference between Snowboard and Ski clothing?
In general, there isn’t much difference between ski and snowboard clothing.
Snowboard gear tends to be looser and baggier, and the jackets are typically longer to provide better coverage when sitting on the snow.
One key thing to watch out for is the fit of your snow pants—make sure the bottoms are wide enough to go over a snowboard boot, which is larger than a ski boot.
I’m giving you this tip from experience… because I made that mistake myself! 😉
